Environmental Safety and Management

Environmental Safety and Management and their application, are relatively new, most legislation on environmental safety and management has only been on the statute books for about ten years.  Even at that, Government and Governmental Departments are still sifting their way through what it actually means for the UK and the planet as a whole.

In the past year Environmental Management has been in the public eye by world events, one a natural disaster the other man made.  The first, hurricane Katrina which decimated New Orleans,  causing serious loss of life and damage to property and environment, the other was an explosion, at the Buncefield oil storage facility in England, although not causing any deaths, it caused massive damage to peoples lives, property and the environment.

These raised the issues of global warming/climate change in peoples minds again.  Cleaning up of areas will be a massive task, especially making sure both are environmentally safe.  Once this has been completed, then the rebuilding process begins.  These may be extreme cases, but the list of environmental disasters caused by humans, is never ending and the final cost incalculable. he list of minor events caused by human activity, is doing more damage and many of these can be prevented or minimised, through routine practices.

Why should companies worry about the consequences their activities might have on the environment?  First, it is required by law, current legislation requires companies to be environmentally aware in various key areas, ranging from, nuisance issues like; noise/fumes, recycling/recovery of packaging, disposing of hazardous waste.  It controls storage, handling, disposal of other wastes, awareness of the flow of effluent, such as detergents/chemicals, into the sewerage system.

A simple spill never mind a major disaster can be a public relations nightmare for a business. Customers expect businesses to be environmentally aware, Investors/Stakeholders, may check a businesses performance against environmental targets etc. before getting involved with a business.

Businesses are now implementing environmental management and safety into their Business and Risk Management policies, most are finding that environmental management is delivering improvements within their business, once employees realise the benefits to be gained, for their community as well as  the business.

Company's are realising there can be cost advantages to implementing Environmental Safety and Management Policy's.  To enable businesses meet their Environmental Policy's targets they require a trained and knowledgeable workforce.  To aid  businesses in providing these skills to individuals, S.H.E.A.T. can provide tailor-made Environmental Awareness courses to suit individual company's
