Safety Training

In many accidents at work, it can be safely said that human factors played a part in the accident happening.  Taking this a step further, one of the most common causes (if not the most common), is the lack of training e.g. a person carrying out a given task, has never been given formal safety training, to enable him/her to carry out the task in a safe manner.

Human factors come into play almost immediately, for example: -

Management assume the person knows how to carry out the work, or use equipment;

Management know full well the person has never done this task before, but he/she has done "something similar" and it should not be too hard to "pick it up", so they tell the person to, "just get on and do it";

Management instead of organizing formal safety training, asks an employee who does the same work (and may also, never had formal safety training) to, "just show him/her how it is done".  The person then picks up the other persons bad habits;

The person carrying out the task, does not want to look silly by telling management he does not know how to do the work;

Friends at work keep telling him/her "not to be silly"  "just get on with it" he/she "will soon pick it up, it's easy".

However all of these are unacceptable in today's working environment, health and safety legislation requires employers to provide employees with appropriate formal safety training to ensure their competency to carry out the work.
